General Motors New Chairman of the Board Following the unanimous election of Mary Barra to the role of Chairman of the Board, General Motors’ CEO is now the newly-appointed Chairman of the Board. Barra succeeds Theodore Solso, who will continue in his role as the Board’s Lead Independent Director, with immediate effect, replacing Solso.

As Chair of the Board of Directors, it is an honor for me to take on this role. According to Barra, “we will continue to build shareholder value by enhancing our core business and leading in personal mobility,” he explained.
This year, Chevrolet produced their 500 millionth vehicle, the 2016 Camaro and Z71 variants of the new Tahoe and Suburban models, under her guidance.
Barra worked as Executive Vice President for Global Product Development, Publishing, and Supply Chain from August 2013 until her appointment as Chairman of the Board. He was the Global Product Development Senior Vice President in February 2011, according to Barra.
Barra began his career with General Motors in 1985 as a co-op student in the Pontiac Motor Division. She earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1985, and a General Motors fellowship in 1988, both of which she used to fund her research. Automaker plans to rename executive chair of the board of directors, from the executive chairman, and “one or more” vice-chairs from vice chairmen in documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on July 9.
